Food security exists “when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life” and therefore refers to both the physical and economic access to food that meets people dietary needs. Conceptually, it can be applied at the individual, household, community, and national levels and is achieved through three consecutive pathways: food availability, access, and utilization. While food insecurity remains highly prevalent, urban agriculture has considerable potential to increase access to and availability of foods that are both healthy and affordable.

Healthy Food Africa Project is testing the feasibility and effectiveness of innovative urban farming among adolescents and women/girls as well as the feasibility of interventions aimed at curbing unhygienic food handling among food handlers in Korogocho and Viwandani informal settlements, Nairobi.
