The Zero hunger initiative, an initiative of the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC). is anchored on the belief that we all have a right to food, and that, “the right to food is not a right to be fed, but primarily the right to feed oneself in dignity.” – Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
The Zero Hunger Initiative seeks to contribute to ending hunger and promoting safe, healthy diets, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger. The initiative focuses on Kenya and other African countries, with a special emphasis on urban poor communities and dryland areas. It is a combination of public engagement, creative capacity building of communities, community driven interventions, applied research and advocacy programs.

The slums present a poor state of living, it is often impossible to find vendors who are open at night due to safety and so if you do not buy your food early there are chances you will not have anything to eat.
There are always innovative ways that young people can be able to have a source of income, teaching them different ways of practicing urban farming is a big solution. Kitchen gardens can take many forms.
Most vendors do not have enough space to prepare and sell their food and in times like these, hygiene is very hard to observe.
Poor waste management is the main cause of water contamination in the slum and this often causes diseases. When the pipes burse, the water we get in the houses is often contaminated and without knowing we drinking is and diseases are inevitable.
